No kids. No pets. No spousal unit.

An invite from Ms. X to go off on an adventure.

A timely coincidence of an e-mail advertising last-minute cruise prices to the Bahamas which were amazingly low.

Sounds like a ‘yes’ to me.

Ms. X was tired of the weather. Tired of the annoying flapping of gums of her co-workers. Tired of drama of family and acquaintances. She needed an escape, but didn’t want to go alone. Knowing I was prone to scooter off for an adventure or seven, she asked if I wanted to go. She’s cute, spunky, fun. Of course I want to go. A few well spent airline miles and we were on our way to warm weather and sunny skies.

Well, supposedly sunny.

A three day cruise, with a one day stopover in the Bahamas. I thought it was always sunny in the Bahamas.

We thought we had our ‘bad travel karma’ used up when she forgot her passport on her way to pick me up to go to the airport. Luckily, since she’s a nervous (some would say “cautious”) traveler, she’d arrived at my place 10 minutes early. Being a tad nervous…whoops…”cautious” myself, I’d already padded the schedule by 20 minutes. Plenty of time to rush back to her place, pick up the passport, and still hit the airport well in time to catch our flight. We thought the rest of trip had to go well since we had our bump ready.

And, mostly, it did.

On board, there was too much food, expensive drinks, cheesy entertainment, and some damn good entertainment.

In the Bahamas? The cruise ship arrived as we slept. We woke to blue skies and ate breakfast on the fantail. We went to the cabin to change and, coming back out, were met by gray skies.

Gray skies...smiling at me...

Still, it was warm. We were in a beautiful, tropic country. It didn’t look like rain [cue ominous music], so we rented a motor scooter to tour the island (“Drive on the left, mon.”).

Half an hour in? Rain. Lots of it. We got soaked, but were laughing and having a great time. The rain tapered, so we kept going to the opposite side of the island. Stopping to look at the view, it started raining again. so, we got back on the scooter to return.

I turned the key. Silence. I kicked the kick start. Silence. I bitched. Loudly. Then laughed. Loudly. It had reached the absurd, so there was nothing to do but laugh at the situation.

Called the scooter company who sent a replacement scooter.

Headed back to town with dampened clothes, but not dampened spirits. A few drinks in town, people watching, and wandering to see the sights.

Sound advice

Next day, the ship wandered the Caribbean and Ms. X and I wandered the decks. There was a two hour window in the afternoon of wonderful sun, warm temperatures, and tropical breezes. There was more entertainment that evening. And more drinking and eating.

And back to the dock in the US of A the next morning, with no-issue flights home to cold and foggy weather.

A wonderful time, even with weather woes, just because I said “yes” to adventure.

I’m liking these “yes” opportunities. I’m open to more in my future.

Halloween, that is.

Yesterday was Halloween. And it closed out a great 5 days of wearing stuff that wasn’t typical. Costume? You bet (and a blast that was). But more…

The folks at the office <del>foolishly</del> wisely asked me to be master of ceremonies at an awards luncheon. Now, while I do theater and being in front of a crowd doesn’t bother me, I don’t often seek out that opportunity outside of theater. This was no different. So, I thought to teach them a lesson. It’s an awards ceremony? Then the emcee should be wearing a tuxedo. So, I wore a tux to the ceremony. And – - -

I wore it to work – -

forgot my top hat at work

I even wore it to the dentist – -

I told them I wore it just for them

And to Krogers – -

amazingly little reaction to this outfit

The next day was dress down day at work. We are, on occasion, allowed to dress less professionally. That day’s theme was favorite sports teams. Therefore – -

yeah, a Steelers fan...deal with it

Then we hit the Halloween weekend, with a couple parties. And, <del>stupidly unthinking</del> bravely on their part, the office encouraged wear of costumes to work. What could I do?

and this was downright comfortable!

Yep. I enjoy this time of year.

Yep. There it is. “The Door”.

And the big boss is showing it to me.

my bunny is actually blue

No, I’m not being fired. And at least he didn’t tell me something trite like, “Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.”

The business I’m in favors job mobility – - moving to a new position every few (3-5?) years. The thought is you don’t want to become stale and entrenched in your current job. Likewise, the thinking is you can bring fresh ideas to the new position.

Poppycock.*

I hold to the counter argument (with allowance for exceptions) that the expertise and depth of knowledge built up over the years is a synergistic bonus to job success. Move only when you want, not when someone thinks you’ve been there too long.

The exceptions? The curmudgeons and troglodytes are always there in any business. Sometimes they must be moved just for the health of the organization. Admittedly in the mostly futile hope of actually finding them a job that they can accomplish without bringing down civilization as we know it.

(by the way, i miss the muppets)

I’ve been here 3 years.** The big boss thinks it’s time for me to go.

So, I seek other jobs in the big organization, outside of my office.

The good part? The jobs I’m looking for mostly require an interview with a panel.

So…

If I “accidentally”, during that interview – - -

a) Pick my nose,

b) Leer at the cleavage of the woman leading the panel,***

c) [there is no (c)], or

d) Channel and start quoting ancient Hittite philosophers.

…or some such nonsense, I can self-sabotage the interview!

But not too much. I don’t want to burn too many bridges before I get to them.

I’m not wanting to move soon.

If I ignore the door…is it not there?

=-=-=-=-=-=-=

*Bullshit!!

**…this time…I like this place I’ve been here numerous times in various positions.

***yeah, I know that wouldn’t really be an “accident”. Rather, it takes purposeful effort to avoid doing that in the first place.

Had the opportunity last night to witness a luscious and talented artist and companion, M. No, not that way (however…hmmm…).

No, this was just something cool and artsy. Me? I appreciate art, but aren’t that artsy myself. So this was a night for appreciation of M’s talents. No, not that way (however…hmmm…).

The local visual arts center sponsors the ‘show’, which features artists of all skill levels. But what’s most fun is the steamroller!

“More than 30 local artists will also create original linoleum block prints that will be printed using the steamroller. Kids & adults can create “mini-steamroller” prints using watercolor paint in a free, family fun activity. Fun for all ages! An Open Portfolio will be held at the adjacent studios of ThinkTV from 5-9 p.m. with many unframed prints for sale at very reasonable prices.”

So the artist carves a picture into a square of linoleum (individual sized – - one foot square; team sized – - four foot square). Then they ink up the square, lay it on a large board on the ground, cover it with canvas, then cover all that with three blankets.

A picture of them prepping the big print – -

The big canvas was tough to lay down flat without smudging.

Then the fun part. They drive a steamroller over it to ‘press’ the ink into the canvas.

heavy machinery for big kids

After the steamroller is clear, they have the big reveal. If they’ve inked the linoleum correctly and if they haven’t smudged extra ink around, the canvas now holds a perfect representation of the carving.

My favorite big print on canvas after a great roll out – -

I enjoy flying. It’s exhilarating.

I also enjoy sharing that thrill of flight with others.

I’ve been seeing S for over a year-and-a-half now. While I continue to enjoy her company [wiggling eyebrows], she’s heavily involved with another guy…her 7-year-old son, J.

I gave S a flight in my plane not long after we started dating, wandering to another airport for dinner. Since that time, she’s been anxious for me to take her 7-year old son up for a ride.

start 'em young

Between our schedules, supporting weather (I don’t like taking newbies up on bumpy or murky days), and a healthy airplane, I finally had an opportunity to take the two of them up for a flight.

I flew in and met S and J at an airport near where they lived south of me and we loaded up. S and I had discussed prior as to where J should sit…in the back with S or in front with me. We both agreed — Absolutely up front.

It was very cute seeing them have to pile up folded up coats and towels so he could boost up high enough to see over the control panel.

As with all my first time passengers, the sight of J getting big eyes and hearing the “Oh my” (or some such) escape his lips as we climbed out was satisfaction enough for me. J was expressively asking questions and looking all over as we flew through the smooth skies.

Then, a surprise I’d saved for both S and J, I asked if J would like to take the controls and fly a bit. Who knew a 7-year old’s eyes could grow so large?

After some vigorous head nodding on J’s part and an ‘okay’ from S, I briefly explained what he needed to do. Then, without flourish, handed the plane over to him. He flew like a champ.

We wandered the countryside, sometimes letting him fly, sometimes me taking over the controls. Finally, it was time to go home.

As we headed back, I obviously took over the controls. Landing is just a wee tad tricky for a 7-year-old with 15 minutes of total flight time to handle.

Coming into the traffic pattern, I was extra observant of what was going on outside the plane, especially making sure there were no other airplanes about which might create a sound hazard (the noise of two planes colliding, I’ve been told, is rather loud).

Realizing that the flight was about to end, J thought that he should get one last chance at the flight controls.

…and grabbed the control wheel…

ACK!

If not for the <del>shriek</del> commanding voice of his mom from the back seat telling him to let go, plus my absolutely heroic efforts to barely wrest control from this <del>surprisingly strong</del> 7-year-old <flexes muscles>, we’d have been flirting with an early meeting with the ground (okay, not really remotely close to that, but it does add a certain drama to the story, right?).

And the amazing thing was that he had no idea that there was a problem with what he’d done.

Fearless.

A good landing (yes, mine…sheesh), a few pictures around the plane, and a quick escape from this miniature Lindbergh-wannabe.

But, yeah, I’ll take up kids again.

Girl Child has been home now for a day short of a week. it has been amazing having her back.

no, she didn't actually walk home

well, amazing for me. for her? a bit of culture shock.

it’s to be expected, yes? she spent the last two years in a place where the village population was about the same as the number of people in the local mall at lunch hour, yet spread over an area about 10 times as big. she’s just not used to people, so many and so close. despite me suggesting she go off and see friends (hers and mine…i wanted to show her off), her first few days desire was to cocoon in the house.

we’ve been playing games (kicked her butt in Boggle, she kicked mine in Bananagrams), watching tv shows (old “West Wing” episodes that we both enjoy), and letting her experience a wide choice of fresh foods (the spinach salad i made her the first night was a total hit!).

oh, and we did end up taking that bike ride that she wanted to go on. on the way home from the airport, she was reiterating her wish list of things to do, which included the bike ride. we had this interchange – - -

Daughter Person: i’m looking forward to a bike ride. but…i’m a little nervous, too. it’s been so long since i rode a bike, i’m not sure i remember how.

The Dadster: don’t worry…you’ll remember…it’s just like riding a bike.

[a quick duck from a flying elbow to the head and i survived that bad joke]

after a few days, she finally wandered out and is slowly re-acclimating to the weather (it’s still winter down in ZA), the hubbub (cars! people! noise!), and to the reality of having to find a job and place to stay.

we’ve been out quite a few times. she’s relearning how to drive a car. she met my Pub Friends at the last get together (so i DID get to show her off!). she took a hike with me, Dear Friend, and another friend. and tonight? she wandered off on her own to meet up with old friends who still live in the area.

she makes it look easy.

she went to the mall by herself, to buy new shoes. and ended up overwhelmed by the choices. yes, they have choices in South Africa, but not in the village where she lived. to get to the choices, she’d have to take a hike, bus, and taxi…some 3 hours to go 40 miles. here? a 2 minute drive to the mall. too close, with still too many choices for her. culture shock.

she’s off again, too soon, to start her new life. heading to Washington DC to look for a job and an apartment. she’s already invited me to come visit and is looking for a time to return here*.

i find myself wondering how much more culture shock that will be. while the local city is clearly much bigger than her Peace Corps village, it’s by now means close to the size and frenetic lifestyle of Washington DC.

i’m thinking she’s in for a bit more culture shock.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

*she damn well better…i’m lending her a car and want it back!
